FAQ : Film Scans

What's Included?

Top quality scans & archival management for film that has already been developed.

*Please note our developing service is currently on pause.

Service includes ...

Frame-by-frame adjustments by skilled technicians to make the most of every image.

Light spotting for dust, though some marks may still be visible. These can usually be treated with our retouching / restoration service upon request.

Negatives are carefully cut by hand and inserted in archival grade sleeves with individual labels.

Film rolls or batches of individual negatives / slides are saved in separate folders and can be organised chronologically if labelled. If you would like to include a note with a date and keyword for each roll or batch (location / event / client / person) we can include this info in your folder names.

Scan Types

Select the file type that best suits your needs.

*Both TIFF scans include complimentary digital contact sheet for a convenient snapshot of your exposures.

JPEG : A vibrant yet natural looking scan with basic colour balancing.

TIFF : A similar look to our JPEG scans, in non-destructive TIFF format for greater editing power.

FLAT TIFF : Ideal for professional editing, a ProRGB 16Bit TIFF with flat (neutral) colour profile. This unique scan maintains greater highlight and shadow detail for ultimate flexibility in the edit. Adjust levels, curves and colour balance in PhotoShop / Lightroom / software of choice.

Resolution

Our scans are High Resolution (*4900 x 3200) and are ideal for fine art printing up to A3 size.

For large prints (A2 and beyond) we recommend upgrading to a Mammoth Resolution scan (9500 x 6500).

*Scan resolutions are approximate. Please expect slight variations depending on your format / frame ratio.

Cut Film

Where possible, we recommend sending your film to us un-cut (rolled) for best scan result. If ordering develop-only at another lab, you can request the technician does not cut the film.

Whole Roll Scans : Please note a $5 handling fee (per roll) is charged for film that is already cut into strips.

After scanning your film, cutting & sleeving in archival grade sleeves in included. If you prefer not to cut your film, please add a note to your order.

Individual Frame Scans : there is no additional charge for film that has been cut. It is still preferable to send the whole roll (un-cut) when possible.
